Unicorn Frappuccino is the new craze at the moment as all Starbucks lovers everywhere will tell you. Unicorns are magical creatures and clearly humans have caught on to that fact. We want to feel magical and ethereal too and in order to do that, we have created all things unicorn. From unicorn makeup brushes to unicorn bagels and unicorn hair (I’m proudly guilty of having rocked purple, unicorn hair) the unicorn craze is clearly not going to be slowing down any time soon. Therefore, I was not surprised to hear that Starbucks had created the mother of all unicorn drinks, the Unicorn Frappuccino.
First off, the Unicorn Frappuccino is only available in select stores from April 19th to the 23d. So if you’re reading this on the 23rd and you love unicorns, then leave the house now. It’s not too late! But actually, first you may want to read on. According to Starbucks, this photogenic drink is “the flavour-changing, color-changing, totally not-made-up unicorn frappuccino”. In terms of the flavour-changing, it is meant to begin by sweetening your palette then magically ending up with a nice sour taste. As for the colour-changing, you swirl the drink to see the drink mystically transform from pink to purple. Furthermore, this particular frap does not contain any caffeine. Most noteworthy is the beauty of the drink. The blue and pink body on a bed of whipped cream sprinkled with colours of blue and pink powders make it one of the most photogenic drinks I’ve seen in my life. Therefore, you could imagine my excitement when Ben came home and surprised me with a venti of the Unicorn frap. He clearly knows me well as I adore anything photogenic.😅
I first proceeded to take pictures of it as Ben informed me that the barista made a few just to get it right. Apparently Starbucks baristas are stressed out of their minds with all the orders. They are making these Unicorn Frappuccinos left and right as unicorn fans are clearly not joking around. Lucky for the baristas, this is not a drink that I nor majority of others will be ordering twice.
My first sip was very, very sweet. I still feel a lump of sweetness in my insides as I’m typing this, that’s how sweet it was. It’s worth it to mention that I do not have a big sweet tooth. Savoury, definitely. I will literally sit there and eat a whole bag of chips to my face in one sitting. But sweet, I can’t handle too much of. We moved the straw around the layered drink and took another sip. This was clearly the sour portion of the drink. My face contorted and naturally duck faced from the sourness. It tasted like dissolved Sour Tarts in sweet juice. I took three sips and that was all that I could survive.
All in all it was a genius marketing strategy of Starbucks to create this colourful drink. Although I wasn’t a fan of the taste of the drink due to the overload of sweetness, I admit I still loved being the owner of one. I took many pictures of it and marvelled at the skills of baristas. Most of all, the sweetness of Ben surprising me with this beautiful drink, was to me, sweeter than the drink itself.
