Terra is an eclectic restaurant in North York specializing in steak and seafood. If you live uptown and you don’t feel like travelling all the way downtown to eat a nice and elegant dinner, I would say you should try out Terra restaurant. Having worked in the restaurant industry at a hotel for 3 years, I’ll be the first to admit that I have high standards for service when it comes to restaurants. Food is obviously important and the same goes for ambience. However, if both those are excelling but the service is lacking, I will 100% not go back to that place.
I will first tell you about the ambience. It was a Friday night and I wanted to dress up in a fabulous outfit after a long week of working and go out on a date with my other half. However, considering it was the last day of a long work week, I didn’t feel like going all the way downtown to have that said date. So, we went to Terra. It was my first time and I had heard great things about it so I was excited. When we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the staff at the bar. The host arrived momentarily and took us to our table. What really made the ambience were these two guys playing instruments and playing classic love songs like “When a Man Loves a Women”. I really enjoyed the ambience and thought it was perfect for the romantic date I was hoping for.
We were welcomed by the server and he was a friendly guy.We had shrimp tacos to start which were very delicious. The order comes with 2 tacos so we had one each and enjoyed it immensely (although I was borderline han-gry I must mention).
Our server recommended the kangaroo and the gnocchi for the main dish. I personally love gnocchi so that’s what I ordered and Ben, my other half got the kangaroo. He wanted the veal chop bone-in however, the server insisted that the kangaroo was the better choice. He ended up getting the kangaroo so that we could try it for the first time. Before we got the main courses, they came with a palette cleanser which was lime sorbet. I am a huge fan of sorbet so I definitely enjoyed it!
I love steak, however, I’m not a big fan of really gamey meats like lamb or even duck. Therefore, I wasn’t a huge fan of kangaroo either. I felt that the corner pieces that were more well done were tastier than the rare pieces in the middle which tasted too gamey for me. We decided that it was great trying it out for the first time but that we would never get it again.
The service was great in the sense that it seemed like he really cared about the restaurant. Staff loyalty tells me that they have been well groomed and that they treat their employees well which are important for a healthy establishment. The only thing I must say I didn’t particularly like was the fact that he kept saying “take your time” but then checking up every 10 minutes towards the end and felt a bit rushed out (even though there were other tables still there) But not a big deal.
My gnocchi I must say was fabulous. It was cooked in a creamy alfredo sauce and cooked to perfection. The sauce wasn’t dumped all over the pasta which gave it more of a crispy texture. I find that when you pour the sauce all over the pasta, it can get a little soggy. There was none of that.
We were too stuffed for dessert, so we didn’t get any dessert. They gave us complimentary crackers and cheese which we didn’t even touch (although I did get a picture!) I thought that this was a nice touch. All in all my experience at Terra was far from Terra-ble (Sorry; you can expect one or two bad puns per post). I would not get the reindeer again but can confidently say I’ll be going back there for gnocchi.
In conclusion, Terra is Alice Approved on ambience and the deliciousness of the gnocchi. If you’ve tried Terra, leave a comment and tell me about your experience. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the restaurant and thank you for reading! ❤︎
