There are a lot of dishes that come to mind when I hear comfort food. Pizza, burgers, fries and of course fish and chips. It seems like there’s a lot of national days these days and today is National French Fry Day! Therefore, I thought it would be fitting to do a restaurant review of my favourite fish and chips restaurant. I’ve been going to New Toronto Fish and Chips for about two decades now, since I was a teeny tween. That may seem like a long time, however it’s doesn’t seem so long considering this diner has been around for more than forty years. It’s obvious in the decor as it screams rustic, retro and exactly what I would want from a fish and chips joint. It’s truly a mom and pops place with the same sweet couple who have been there since day one.
Nevertheless, it’s not just the retro vibes or their friendly service that keeps me going back. The food at New Toronto Fish and Chips is simply superb. The batter that they use for the halibut is so crispy and consistently fresh. The fries are always cut fresh and never frozen and their coleslaw is the best coleslaw I’ve ever had. Rather than the traditional creamy coleslaw, it’s more vinegary. The vinegar in the coleslaw does a fabulous job in cutting the oiliness of the fried dish. In addition, their gravy is flavourful and thick.
Well, hope you enjoyed the review of my favourite fish and chips joint! Thought it was fitting as I caught a fish over the weekend at the cottage (although it was tiny haha). If you’re ever craving fish and chips or you’re around Etobicoke, I hope you’ll get to try New Toronto Fish and Chips. You will not regret it. I know I never do even though I go all the way there from uptown. And if you’re still not convinced, check out this article on blogTO. What’s your favourite fish and chips joint? Let minnow? (sorry couldn’t help it) in the comments below and thanks so much for reading! See you next week?
